In Saint-Claude, our master pipe maker noted that your pipe was particularly dirty in the stem. Not having been cleaned regularly, the fluff was 'stuck' by the tars inside the stem and that is why it detached from the stem. Balsa is a lightweight and very soft wood that has the advantage of absorbing impurities (tar) as well as potential condensation inside the pipe.
