It offers multiple advantages over glass: lightness, strength, and cost (in other words, we wouldn't be able to offer these prices if it were glass). The International Spirits Center (based in the Cognac production region) has stored rums and whiskies in PET for years and it hasn't changed. Moreover, the Northern European countries have long adopted PET for spirits even for large bottles. These are the arguments in favor of PET, but we completely understand that one might prefer glass.
