To add a note of information on this subject: amethyst can show strata or bands within the stone. These strata are the result of variations in the stone's growth conditions over time. Amethyst is a variety of quartz, and like other types of quartz, it can show bands or areas of different color due to variations in impurity concentration, temperature, pressure and other factors during its formation. These bands can vary in thickness and color, from very thin to wider bands, and from light to dark purple hues. Strata can add to the beauty and uniqueness of each amethyst specimen.
