Regarding your comment on starch, it is important to clarify that the percentage of starch in a feed is not sufficient on its own to determine whether it is suitable for a horse prone to blood rushes. It is especially important to consider the total amount of starch actually ingested per meal, which depends on both the starch content of the feed and the quantity distributed.

Starch, naturally present in cereals, is a source of energy for the horse. Its nature and digestibility must also be taken into account: depending on the cereal used (barley vs oats, for example) and its presentation (beware of flakes!), starch is not digested and assimilated in the same way, which particularly influences the horse's glycemic response.

In the specific case of a horse with PSSM1, it is recommended not to exceed 15 to 20 g of starch per 100 kg of body weight per meal, which is 75 to 100 g for a 500 kg horse. For PSSM2 horses, the recommendation is 20 to 40 g per 100 kg of body weight per meal.

More generally, the diet of a PSSM horse should prioritize fibers and fats while controlling the intake of starch and sugars. Fats are particularly an alternative source of energy to carbohydrates, especially interesting when the horse's energy needs require the addition of a concentrated feed.

The quantity distributed remains crucial: for a 500 kg PSSM1 horse, for example, we recommend meals not exceeding 500 g of Adult Specific Energy.

Finally, the nutritional management of a PSSM horse does not only involve controlling starch and sugar intake. It is also essential to ensure the overall balance of the ration, particularly with adequate coverage of antioxidant needs, especially vitamin E and selenium, which contribute to cell protection and proper muscle function. For an adult PSSM horse weighing 500 kg, it is recommended, across the entire daily ration (forage + concentrated feed + any supplements), an intake of about 5,000 IU of vitamin E and 2 to 3 mg of selenium per day.
