I bought repellent oil for my horses and my dog and I am not convinced of its effectiveness over several hours. Maybe it is effective against flies on the horses' heads but since they have masks... I also took anti-itch gel for my golden and there too, not convinced.

The effectiveness of repellents depends a lot on conditions, heat, sweating, rain, and renewal: the mist covers the body and is regularly renewed, while the oil lasts longer on targeted areas. On your horses already equipped with masks, the head is indeed protected, and the repellent then makes sense on the rest of the body and exposed areas. For your golden's anti-itch gel, it is a soothing treatment that calms the skin without repelling parasites: it is used in addition to a repellent and the anti-parasitic strategy.
